The BATTERY OLYMPICS® game is an effective instrument that not only presents the tools of Lean Manufacturing, but also shows the mechanisms of their implementation. An important part of the game are lead times for individual products, which underline the significant role of planning during the order handling process.
The game also reflects Visual Performance Management techniques and the rules for management of Kaizen actions.
The game can be used in the production environment.Ask
Difficulty level: medium
Number of rounds: 3
Purpose: underlining the important role of planning in the manufacturing process; demonstrating Lean Manufacturing tools and possibilities of their implementation.
Rules of the game: we simulate the Make To Order manufacturing process with variable lead times (LT). The manufacturing process is single-thread, pipeline production, which lends itself to improvement in terms of lead times so as to change it into a multi-threaded process.
In the game players simulate the roles of the Customer, Customer Service, Planning Warehouseman and Production Operators. Optional roles include the Boss and the observers.
Between the rounds players analyse the results achieved and use the current performance as a springboard for process improvements.
Number of players: 6–8 people + observers
Duration time: 3–8 hours, depending on the scenario
